The impact of chemical industry, particularly production of pharmaceuticals, has grown exponentially in last decades. It is important to create environmentally friendly, green, syntheses of organic compounds of biological importance that produce less waste, utilize less hazardous reagents, and simple in isolation of products.
In our group we develop solvent-free green methodologies. Our current focus is on synthesis of curcumin-inspired therapeutics. We use a hybrid synthetic-computational approach in our research. This allows us to understand mechanisms of transformations in hands and empowers us to improve them.
What makes us a strong research group?
We have a smart and caring leader - Dr. S.! We have a motivated and hard-working team! We have a great technology! We have excellent collaborators!
21 years of experience
The PI had worked in organic/organometallic synthesis for a long time and has a great record of publications. Her experience ranges from Mössbauer spectroscopy to organophosphorus, palladium, catalysis and green chemistry.
Just in the last year Dr. S. had secured two external grants to fund her research laboratory and four internal grants to fund her educational research. Dr. S. is passionate about chemistry and had established an outreach system with Winona Public Schools and Winona State University Children Center to share beauty and magic of chemistry with children and the community.
During her career she had worked with many talented students both undergraduate and graduate and many of them became very successful. Check out our Alumni page to see for yourself.
Outstanding team
Dr. S. believes that select undergraduate students with her guidance can reach an amazing progress. After completing a two-week training probationally period Dr. S. works with every student to develop a unique project within a vision of her research tailored to student's abilities and goals.
After a semester work Dr. S. ensures that every student has an opportunity to present their research as a poster on a conference and assists writing an Undergraduate Research and Creativity grant to fund student's work.
During last 4 years at UWL her group employed 28 students. Six of them went on pursuing graduate studies in Organic Chemistry or closely related field. Ten have been accepted in professional schools. Three joined industry and five of them currently working in her group. We care about our people and maintain close family like environment!
We are making miracles
Our products are curcuminoids - compounds analogous to curcumin. Curcumin is one of the main components of turmeric and has been used in Asian medicine for centuries but suffers from low water solubility and other drawbacks. Curcuminoids offer a potential solution to problems of curcumin itself.
These compounds can have an amazing and superb medicinal potential from inhibiting a virus to curing Alzheimer decease and cancer! However, the commercial availability of curcuminoids is limited to few examples. The high purity required for biological studies also comes with high cost.
Traditionally, synthesis of curcuminoids is rather synthetic art. In our group we not only make new compounds but find new synthetic methodologies that allow many other diverse groups to make these compound easier, better, faster, and with high purity.
Our programs
Our approach to research blends projects in organic synthesis and method development with computational modeling of relevant compounds. We use spectroscopic methods to investigate mechanisms and microwave chemistry to speed up our production of new compounds.
